“Google will launch prototype satellites carrying its AI chips into orbit in early 2027, under Project Suncatcher, as the first step toward data centers in space: 'One of our moonshots is to, how do we one day have data centers in space so that we can better harness the energy from the sun?'”

CEO, Google and Alphabet

Narrowed from the bundled 'space data centers will be a new normal in a decade' framing to the dated, checkable piece: two prototype Project Suncatcher satellites built with Planet Labs, carrying TPUs, launching by early 2027.

“Waymo will be "meaningful" to Alphabet's financials as soon as 2027, as the company eyes "aggressive" expansion in the coming year.”

CEO, Google and Alphabet

Deadline is end of 2027. At the time of the prediction Waymo operated paid service in Austin, the Bay Area, Phoenix, Atlanta and Los Angeles, with ~450,000 weekly paid rides and a planned 2026 expansion to 11 more US metros plus London.

“Will the AI think it has reached AGI by 2030? I would say we will just fall short of that timeline, so I think it'll take a bit longer... I don't think we'll quite get there by 2030, so my sense is it's slightly after that — but by 2030 there'll be such dramatic progress, we'll be dealing with the consequences of that progress in a big way.”

CEO of Google and Alphabet

Notably more conservative than Google DeepMind's own Demis Hassabis and Sergey Brin, who both pointed to roughly 2030; resolves at the end of 2030.

“AI Overviews will begin rolling out to everyone in the U.S. starting today, with more countries soon. By the end of the year, AI Overviews will come to over a billion people in Google Search.”

CEO, Google and Alphabet

Hit ahead of schedule: on Alphabet's Q3 2024 earnings call (October 29, 2024) Pichai said AI Overviews was expanding to over 100 new countries and 'will now reach more than 1 billion users on a monthly basis.' Usage kept climbing to 1.5 billion by May 2025 and 2 billion by mid-2025.

“We are confident about the opportunities ahead, and to accelerate our progress, we expect to invest approximately $75 billion in capital expenditures in 2025.”

CEO, Alphabet and Google

The direction was right but the number was well short: Alphabet raised guidance to $85 billion in July 2025 and finished the year at roughly $91.4 billion of capex, about 22% above the February forecast.
