“Asked whether his 2017 prediction that AI would displace 50% of human jobs by 2027 still holds: "It's actually uncannily accurate. People have criticized me for being too aggressive in 2017, 2018, 2019, and I was a little nervous."”

Chairman & CEO, Sinovation Ventures; former president of Google China

Resolves at the end of 2027 against measured job displacement; as of 2026 aggregate labor-market data show nothing approaching 50% displacement.

“China will be "completely self-sufficient" in chips within two to three years. Chinese chipmakers' products might not be as good as Nvidia's, but they are used to competing on lower margins — and US export controls create a powerful incentive for investment in Chinese innovation. "The export controls do not work."”

Chairman & CEO of Sinovation Ventures; founder and CEO of 01.AI; former President of Google China

Resolves by September 2029 on whether China's semiconductor supply (including advanced logic and the tools to make it) is effectively domestically sourced; as of the prediction date China still depended heavily on foreign EUV lithography and HBM.

“Based on the current trends in technology advancement and adoption, I predict that within fifteen years, artificial intelligence will technically be able to replace around 40 to 50 percent of jobs in the United States. Actual job losses may end up lagging those technical capabilities by an additional decade, but I forecast that the disruption to job markets will be very real, very large, and coming soon.”

Deadline is 2033. Elsewhere in the same book Lee frames the estimate as 'within ten to twenty years, 40 to 50 percent of jobs in the United States'; in 2024 he described the forecast as having proven 'eerily accurate.'

“"Chauffeurs, truck drivers, anyone who does driving for a living — their jobs will be disrupted more in the 15-to-20-year time frame. And many jobs that seem a little bit complex — chef, waiter — a lot of things will become automated... all together in 15 years, that's going to displace about 40 percent of the jobs in the world." (Asked if 40% of jobs will be displaced, Lee clarified: "I would say displaceable.")”

Resolves at end-2034 on whether AI is technically capable of displacing roughly 40% of global jobs; note Lee's separate, earlier prediction that AI would displace 50% of jobs by 2027 is tracked separately (kaifulee-2024-fifty-percent-jobs-2027).

“By 2041, I predict that AI will beat humans at an ever-increasing number of tasks. But that will not render us useless or unemployed. I think there will be many existing tasks that humans can handle much better than software programs or robots.”

Chairman and CEO, Sinovation Ventures; co-author of AI 2041

Horizon is 2041; resolves on whether AI's capability gains are accompanied by mass unemployment or human 'uselessness.'
