AI was used throughout the 2024 cycle but nowhere near the imagined scale: Kapoor and Narayanan catalogued only 78 election deepfakes worldwide, the News Literacy Project found non-AI 'cheap fakes' about seven times more common, and analysts concluded the anticipated AI election apocalypse never arrived — while the narrative about deepfakes drew far more attention than the deepfakes themselves, as she forecast.
